Dr. M Mosharraf Hossain - a source of inspiration

Asim Tarafder

Dr. M Mosharraf Hossain, Past District Governor of Rotary International District 3281 was like an umbrella to the members of Rotary Club of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka as well as the Rotary of Bangladesh. Like many others, I have had the opportunity to come into his close connection through Rotary movements. His knowledge, experience, passion, fashion, sense of humor and lifestyle attracted me in such a way that I couldn’t but become a follower of Dr. Mosharraf. He was the founder Chairman and Managing Director of Rapport Bangladesh Limited - a reputed firm of management consulting & training. This very popular Public Speaker and pioneer management consultant & trainer Dr. Mosharraf Hossain passed away on 7th June, 2016, the first day of Ramadan, due to old age complications while he was 71.

Dr. Mosharraf had been practicing management consultancy for 45 years and imparting management training for 35 years. His consultancy assignments were in the areas of general management, personnel, marketing and recruitment and personnel selection. He had worked as Project Director in many consulting works carried out for World Bank, ILO, UNESCO, NGOs and private and public sector companies. He introduced a number of new management services all first time in the business world of Bangladesh like “Security Services” (1972), Head Hunting (1973), Management Training in the Private Sector (1975), Management Training Courses through correspondence (1978).

Dr. Mosharraf used to say, “Around 95 percent of students in our country have a mentality to pursue a higher degree to get a good job which is a visionless attitude. Most job aspirants are now interested in getting a job only, rather than pursuing a good career.” In every event that he organized, he displayed the true meaning of management.

The core areas of his training activities were public speaking and communication, team building and leadership, financial management, report writing, training of trainers (ToT), supervisory skills, training methodology and corporate social responsibility. It was his forte to give ceremonial recognition to the deserving personalities of the country for their contribution to human resources development and management.

As a Rotarian, he made significant contributions to the HRD of the country. For his devotion and commitment to social services, he was made the District Governor (1994-95 & 1995-96), District Trainer (2002-03) and District Coordinator (2013-14). In recognition of his brilliant social services, he was also declared the Best Rotarian of the Year 2005. A permanent member of Dhaka Club and Dhanmondi Club, Dr. Mosharraf was also a life member of the DU Alumni Association, the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Society for Training and Development. At his initiative and invitation, Nobel Laureate Mother Teresa paid a visit to Bangladesh.

Born on 15th February 1945, Dr. Mosharraf remained a devoted life partner to Momtaj Hossain, who had been extremely supportive and a source of encouragement to him. Father of two children -son Tareq and daughter Anita - he used to draw inspiration from them as well.

He received PhD in Management from the University of New Castle (1st class 1st), USA and MBA from the same University. Born on February 15, 1945, Dr. Mosharraf had his Master’s Degree in social science from the University of Dhaka in 1967 and obtained Diploma in Data Processing and Computer Technology from The Panjab University, Diploma in Management Consultancy from the Institute of Management Consultants of India & had his training in management consultancy from USA & UK. He is a Fellow of The Institute of Management Consultants (India). He received a large number of both national and international awards including 5 gold medals.

Some damage can be repaired, some gaps can be filled up but some can’t be. He has now passed to the Great Beyond but still he belongs to and will remain in our memory as a source of inspiration.
